DRM wot I have stripped
Posted by Flub on January 22, 2011
I want to talk about ebooks. Simple fact is I love reading. Always have. I used to spend a sizable chunk of my income on paper books. Now I do the same with ebooks. Normaly for the iPad Kindle app. The problem is drm. If at some point Sony decide to release the best ereader in the world that spits diamonds and gives blowjobs I’d have to start my ebook collection from scratch since my books use DRM that locks them to the Kindle. In fact most major suppliers do the same. So all those books I then went on to buy on the Sony Blowjob would be locked to a device that can read that type of DRMd books.
So we come onto what to do about it. We remove the drm of course. It’s trivially easy and best of all the method only works on your own books. The problem? Rather mentally it’s illegal. So when you follow my next link and read all the wonderful information within and then install Calibre to use the fantastic drm stripping plugins written by some very talented people please remember that as far as the publishers are concerned you might as well be Hitler. And yes. This is how they treat paying customers.
Now go here and smash that drm. Stick it to the man. Take back your property. Just don’t kill any Jews. Most of them are really nice and the mustache wouldn’t suit you.

Thanks for the helpful link. Been waiting on a book to be re-released on the Kindle store for weeks. Will just buy it from another website and strip the DRM now.

[...] I finally gave up waiting for The Neutronium Alchemist to arrive on the Kindle store. After reading this blog post by the Mighty Flub, which linked to this simple guide on stripping DRM, I went for it. Yeah [...]

It’s middle book syndrome again I see. All three from the same publisher and yet the middle one is unavailable. You’re going to be annoyed when I tell you about my copy. I bought it from Fictionwise back in the days before they went all hardcore on the territorial lockouts. $8. Mobi format (So even back then drm stripping was easy). The best part? All three books in the series in one ebook. I notice today Fictionwise have none of the three books.

I contacted the publisher and they said the book was faulty somehow and they were fixing it, said it would be about 1-2weeks. That was three weeks ago. What has irritated me is that you can get this second book on every other ebook store. I could get it on iBooks for my iPad but I bought a Kindle for a reason!
Equally annoying is that the whole trilogy is available on a US store for $9 in one eBook. They waited until I registered, put in all my details and went through to PayPal authorization before telling me I couldn’t buy it being a UK resident. The mind boggles with digital borders.
I eventually got the book I wanted from Waterstones online as I had a bit of money on my rewards card. I was surprised at how easy it was to strip the DRM with Calibre, and equally happy it can email it direct to my Kindle.
